When we watch bad movies of some prolific directors, we try to assure ourself that it's just a small slip. But when we watch certain movies, we tend to wonder whether this director was the one who made his first movie. Pandiraj is a perfect example of what I am talking about. His national award winning “Pasanga” was brilliant and his next 3 outings have become disastrous to his reputation that he gained through his first movie.

Kedi Billa Killadi Ranga is an extended version of Lollu Sabha that we used to see on Vijay TV. You are pretty sure that director wasn't sure what scene is going to be the next when he was directing the previous one. Every scene is distorted and meanders towards an end nobody in the crew knew. The director wakes up exactly 15 minutes before the end, realises his characters are going nowhere, plugs in a sentimental death scene and everybody turns out to be good at last.

I am not saying KKBR was bad. There are some genuinely hilarious scenes that will make you laugh endlessly when you see them. For instance, the whole election sequence or the scene where Vimal and group drink with Bindu Madhavi's father to find why she is violent will tickle your funny bones. Yuvan's music, although templatish is wonderful to listen. I haven't stopped murmuring “Sarayathil Yedhu Bodhai”. The timing sense of Siva Karthikeyan and Parotta Soori is wonderful. But the sequences and jokes are so pedestrian that you don't remember any of them after finishing the movie.

I am worried at the ways taken by some directors. They really believe that people will accept movies that have string of jokes with a comedy star in the lead without any real story. I know few movies have done well and pathetic to see directors taking them as a trend. Full length comedy movies don't work because of the jokes, they work because of the comic situations that screenplay throws at the audience. Go back to the classics and you will know what I am saying.

It is even more sad when directors like Pandiraj take this route. Pasanga was original and had its heart in place. He has to do some soul searching before he makes his next movie otherwise he will become an one movie wonder. Only few directors garner applause and whistles when their name comes on screen, please don't lose them.

Kedi Billa Killadi Ranga – 1.5/5 – you can watch the jokes pretty soon on a TV near you.
