When Kala Pani was in production, India Today called it an epic gamble. No director would attempt such crazy production values for a regional language movie. Mohanlal and “Good Knight” Mohan (co-producers) along with Priyadarshan attempted to create a pre-independence movie that defined grandeur at that time. A huge set of the cellular jail was created in Chennai at Murugalaya Studios and Santosh Sivan made sure the meticulous details weren’t left out.

An epic movie like this needed a score that will match the movie. And that’s what Ilaiyaraaja gave. The background score took 20 days to complete. Listen to him talking about the background score.
